Queen iconic entrance to Wembley Stadium for Live Aid 1985
In a recent interview offered to Radio Times magazine Sir Brian May said Queen had no intentions of playing the epic Live Aid concert on July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium.
May recalled that in 1985 they were already a veteran band of rockers, who on the dates close to Live Aid were not touring and they also had no plans to play.
Besides, the idea of putting 50 bands together at Wembley Stadium seemed to them a bad idea that would end in "a disaster".
“I don’t have a good feeling about this,” Mercury said.
Brian May said that even though Mercury wasn't the band's leader, it was difficult to change his mind, so they "left the idea of "Live Aid alone."
Weeks after they had conversation, hundreds of tickets had been sold and expectations were growing around the festival. Tension escalated when Bob Geldof (event organizer) began phoning them constantly, insisting that they join the poster.
May confessed that at the time only drummer Roger Taylor wanted to attend. Whereas Freddie Mercury and bassist John Deacon voiced their denial.
Meanwhile Geldof kept calling to try and convince them. That moment while May was holding the phone against her ear and Bob Geldof was talking, she realized Taylor was right.
“The band’s got to get the party on. "If we woke up the day after Live Aid and we weren't there, we're going to feel bad, I'm sure," May told Freddie, then he said:
"Fuck it, let's do it!" “, at that moment Freddie became unstoppable, as Sir Brian recalls.
“Once he said ‘yes’, he took the lead (Freddie Mercury). He leaped like a lion," said May, who is now 77 years old.
What songs did Queen play on live aid?
Bob Geldof gave only one instruction to Queen, because of the magnitude of the event: they only had 17 minutes on stage, so they couldn't improvise acts or extend songs.
"Don't get creative, just hit hits. You have 17 minutes," Geldof told them.
With limited time, which was a challenge, they had to decide which songs they would play. By the time, Queen had at least 15 or 20 hits, counting singles that entered the Top 20 of the UK and US charts.
For Taylor it was “obvious” to open with “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and end with “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”
"They told us to strictly comply with the 17 minutes. At the end I think it was 21 minutes ‘Why?. ‘That was for Freddie and his call and answer ‘ay-ho’ of course... ", Taylor said.
Queen finally took the stage in front of more than 72,000 attendees, who joined their voices in unison with Mercury. The band performed the hits “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Radio Ga Ga”, “Hammer to Fall”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions”.
This is how four veteran rockers took to the stage at the epic Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1985 to shiver the audience of "Live Aid", and ended up giving a performance that, to this day, many still consider one of the best in the history of the music.
