Brian May First Time With Freddie

“The very first time we met Freddie was at one of our gigs. He came up to us and said, ‘You guys are great, really brilliant, but you should do this, you should do that—you should be more dramatic, have more lights, more sound…’

We were thinking, who is this guy? And he said, ‘Well, I’m a singer, darling, I’m a singer.’

We thought, okay… fine! But he kept showing up at our gigs, giving the same advice. At the time, we were in tricky territory. Our band was called Smile. Our singer had just left for another group called Humpy Bong, heading off to bigger things, and we wondered, ‘Great, what now?’

Then Freddie said, ‘I’ll sing for you.’ I asked, ‘Can you even sing?’ He said, ‘Yes, of course, I can sing.’ We started practicing together, and our first impression was: Oh my God! He was full of energy, always moving, screaming his head off—it was overwhelming but impressive.

After a few rehearsals and a couple of small gigs, we realized Freddie could really sing and had incredible ideas. At that point, it was just Roger, myself, and Freddie. We struggled to find the right bass player, going through about a dozen, until we found John Deacon. Everything just clicked, and suddenly, Queen was born.

It completely changed our lives. None of us knew where it would take us. Looking back, we were just kids with impossible dreams, thinking we could change the world.”
