New twist in Lawyer X royal commission threatens faith in Victoria's legal profession | RN Breakfast

Victoria's legal system is facing a deepening crisis after police revealed they'd been using a criminal defence lawyer, known as Lawyer X, as a paid informant for a decade longer than they first believed.

Attorney General Jill Hennessy can't say whether there are still lawyers acting as police informants today but the ABC understands there are up to six other lawyers who have done so.

The revelations could jeopardise hundreds of convictions, including those of a number of notorious underworld figures during Melbourne's bloody gangland war in the early 2000s.
