Blutenburg Munich

If you cross the city border via the Highway A8 coming from Stuttgart, you should definitely make a short detour to Blutenburg. Directly after the roundabout and before the gas station you enter the Seldweg and a parking place is found immediately.

Just a few steps and you will see the idyllic Blutenburg with its original castle church.

Why it is called Blutenburg can no longer be exactly understood. Perhaps because Duke Albrecht III took over the construction of the castle economically and "bled" for it in the old Bavarian style.
However, the first documents on the castle can be found in 1432. Duke Sigismund, the son of Albrecht III, added the castle chapel in 1492.
Duke Sigismund had himself immortalized by the painter Jan Polack in the panel painting of the main altar together with Saint Bartholomew.
Apart from Grünwald Castle, Blutenburg Castle is the only medieval castle in the vicinity of Munich.

In 2001, one of the numerous memorials of the artist Hubertus von Pilgrim was erected directly on the large lake. The memorial is supposed to commemorate the terrible death march of the prisoners of the Dachau concentration camp during the last days of the Second World War.

Since its renovation in 1980, the castle has housed the Michael Ende Museum.

The castle is also famous for its International Youth Library. Here you will find books for children and young people from all over the world, both in original language and in German translation.

In the past, there was a free line of sight from Nymphenburg Palace to Blutenburg Castle, which is unfortunately blocked today. Nevertheless, you can reach Nymphenburg Castle on foot or by bike through the green countryside and along the Würm River.
