Violent Femmes self titled debut was classified contraband that you had to listen to on your headphones or at a very low volume, so that your parents didn’t hear especially. Add it Up and Gone Daddy Gone for obvious reasons. Here Gordon Gano and Brian Ritchie tell the story behind one of the highlights of the record, Blister in the Sun. If you got shoved into your locker or your crush didn’t even wince as you gazed at he or she from a far, Gordon and Brian had ya covered. The legend we always heard is that Gordon wrote all of those early songs when he was in high school himself which made perfect sense because he captured our longing and uncoordinated gawkiness with a grace and beauty that very few in the rock era have. I was fortunate to interview them and here is the first nugget from that sit down, the story of Blister in the Sun from the aforementioned record. More to come from this once in a life time band.

If you were a child of the 80s in John Hughes America there was a very small circle of trust you had when it came to rock artists. I’m talking about the one’s who truly tapped into your teenage angst, loneliness, and fears. There are a couple who always get mentioned, ya know The Smiths, Depeche Mode, REM and later Nirvana. Although there is one band that is just as ingrained in the memory of Generation X’s teenage survival experience that deserve special recognition.. Violent Femmes.

The reason they don’t get as much credit for helping you survive the teenage wasteland of our youth, at least for me, they were a safely guarded secret. What I mean is that the Femmes self titled debut album, which is not only one of the greatest records of the 80s it’s one of the greatest 1st albums of the rock era, is because it’s a supreme document of my generations awkward teenage experience. It really was contraband. A top secret tape that a close circle of friends shared with one another very cautiously.

We were an exclusive institution of youthful, nerdy romantics who felt a little more deeply or maybe we were a handful of sick and twisted kids who's penchant for dark humor and cleverness could truly appreciate a band like the femmes, take your pick. It’s probably why it took half a decade for the album to go gold and 8 years to go platinum and appear on the pop charts. Again Violent Femmes selt titled debut was classified contraband that you had to listen to in your headphones or at a very low volume, so that your parents didn’t hear especially Add it Up and Gone Daddy Gone for obvious reasons.
