Ask The Doctor: The Skin Around My Nail is Red & Swollen

If the skin around your toe is red and swollen, chances are you're suffering from an ingrown toenail. Dr. Norman Regal, DPM explains...

TRANSCRIPTION:
Most likely this is an ingrown toenail and ingrown toenails have a variety of causes. They
can be from poor cutting technique. They can be from the structure of the nail. They can be from hereditary. They can be from trauma. Generally, if you're dealing with redness, you may have
a mild infection in the nail bed and the problem with the nail is being the furthest from the circulation, blood flow just does not get to this area well, and these infections can just sit
there and become very irritated. The typical home remedy is to soak in Epsom salt and try to trim it and this can be effective and help people. But when that ingrown toenail becomes too
irritated, most of the time you're not gonna be able to take care of this itself. Surprisingly, there is simple procedures to solve an ingrown toenail, and it always amazes me that people come in and say they've dealt with this in one fashion or another for years, not realizing that something could
be done. It generally requires a very simple in-office procedure where the corner of the nail is taken out and the base of the nail is cauterized so that that corner will not regrow. This tends to be very effective and not only prevents future infection but also is extremely good at reducing the pain
associated with this.
