What no one tells grieving families at the airport

If you are ever flying with the ashes of someone you loved, please read this carefully, because twenty years standing at this checkpoint has shown me grieving families fall apart at this exact spot over the very same mistake.

The urn you carry has to be inside a container the X-ray machine can actually see through. Wood, plastic, cardboard, and soft cloth all pass through with no trouble at all. Solid metal, marble, ceramic, and dense stone do not. The screen goes black, we cannot legally clear it, and we are not allowed to open it for you to verify what is inside.

Ask the funeral home for a temporary travel urn, bring the certified death certificate and the cremation paperwork tucked in alongside it, and keep the whole thing in your carry-on so it never leaves your sight for a moment. The last thing a grieving family should ever do is stand at a lost luggage counter looking for their mother.
