My method is simple. I convert a full RGB image to Black and White either in Photoshop or Lightroom. Set a white and black point. Adjust mid tones. By this point I usually have a complete histogram showing. Then I selectively adjust tones using the color sliders in the LR B7W adjusting section. Sharpen by using the masking method to only affect the edges of contrasting shades or tones and not areas such as skies or smooth areas.
I touch up with adjustment brushes to doge and burn as needed.
Once I am satisfied, I print letting the APP handle color management, through an ICC profile for the printer /paper combo.
Of course I turn OFF color management in the printer driver.

The results are always neutral and rich!
