WATCH: ‘We know exactly what [Trump’s] motive was’ in nominating Barrett, Durbin says

“One of the things we have witnessed here is ... a denigration of the process to the point where it’s almost useless,” Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said Oct. 15 during the last day of Supreme Court confirmation proceedings for Judge Amy Coney Barrett. President Donald Trump and Republicans moved quickly to nominate Barrett after the death of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in order to fill the vacancy before the Nov. 3 presidential election. “We really don’t know what she thinks about any major issues,” Durbin said of Barrett, who declined to indicate her position or thinking on policy issues such as climate change, health care and voter intimidation throughout the two previous days of questioning, as previous nominees have done. Republicans have said throughout the week it's not the job of a judicial nominee to share her policy views. But without that insight, Durbin said the committee and the public is left looking at the president, who has made clear his motivations in nominating Barrett -- a Supreme Court appointee who will overturn the Affordable Care Act. “We know exactly what his motive was - he doesn't cover it up,” Durbin said, adding that by pushing through Barrett’s nomination through the Senate before the election was defying its own “tradition of common sense.” “This nomination,” Durbin said, “is beneath the dignity of this committee.”
