Dr. Sugai Explains: Itchy Scalp and Dandruff- What Shampoos to Consider

This is the first of the “Dr. Sugai Explains...” Series where I will do overviews of requested skin conditions and also breakdown popular ingredients in your skin care products.

Dandruff is a very common issue that unfortunately has no cure. It is a condition that lies on a spectrum where the severe form is scalp psoriasis. These are all inflammatory conditions that can be controlled with medications/topicals that will tone down the symptoms but not definitely cure the conditions.

I will discuss the cause of seborrheic dermatitis and also the other conditions that the yeast Malasezzia can cause. At the end, I will discuss over the counter options that you could consider. Your dermatologist can guide you on how to use them and they may prescribe additional medications for optimal control. Again, this does not replace a visit to your dermatologist and always consult your physicians before starting an over the counter medication (even if it’s a shampoo) if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
