Hot on the heels of the video versions of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musicals 'Cats' and 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat', production is under way at Britain's Pinewood Studios on a small screen adaptation of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.
Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's record-breaking musical first opened on stage in America in 1970, catapulting the pair to immediate international acclaim. Hailed as an instant classic, the show remains as much of a phenomenon today as it was 30 years ago.
The new movie version brings together cast members from earlier productions, introducing some new faces to the show, including British comedian/actor RIK MAYALL.
Directed by GALE EDWARDS - who helmed the recent smash hit revival in London's West End and on Broadway - the musical tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus, from his entry into Jerusalem, to his trial and crucifixion.
GLENN CARTER, who recently starred in Lloyd Webber's 'Whistle Down the Wind', takes the title role, while the pivotal part of Mary Magdalene is played by RENEE CASTLE. Both are seasoned theatrical performers, and Carter will soon be seen in the independent feature 'Nine Lives', directed by Simon Monjack.
Originally from Australia, Gale Edwards has directed many plays and operas including 'The Real Thing', 'King Lear' and 'The Magic Flute'.
'Jesus Christ Superstar' first ran on London's West End from 1972 to 1980, grossing more than US dlrs 10 million. Since then, it has been produced in 36 countries worldwide, including Kenya, Mexico, Zimbabwe and the Czech Republic.
A major UK tour of the latest live production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' was a huge success, and moved to Broadway this month.
A movie version of 'Superstar', directed by Norman Jewison, was released back in 1973. It starred Ted Neeley as Jesus Christ and Carl Anderson II as Judas.
