Josef Lhevinne plays Schumann Toccata (fresh transfer)

Russian-born pianist Josef Lhévinne's legendary 1935 recording of Schumann's Toccata in C Major Op.7. Long held up as the reference recording of the work, this performance is among the mere hour or so that the famous pianist and teacher recorded for RCA in the 1920s and 30s. Justly admired for his beautifully polished tone and remarkable fingerwork, Lhévinne plays here with a that revered refined sonority, fluid phrasing, burnished melodic lines, and transparent textures, eschewing the temptation to resort to speed and pyrotechnics at the expense of clarity and beauty.

Many thanks to Tom Jardine, who provided this exceptional transfer of the autographed copy of the record pictured in this video.
