Controversial naval drills in South Africa feature China, Russia, Iran amid Ukraine war tensions

China, Russia, and Iran began joint naval exercises off South Africa’s coast on January 9 under "Exercise WILL FOR PEACE 2026," aimed at boosting BRICS Plus maritime cooperation. Held near Simon’s Town, the drills involve BRICS Plus navies, including recent members Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. While South Africa framed the exercises as promoting maritime security, protesters condemned Russia’s presence amid the Ukraine war, calling it “emotionally hard” to witness.
