Fact 4: HIV AMONG GAY, BISEXUAL, AND DOWN-LOW MEN

FACT 4: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, particularly young African American are most seriously affected by HIV/AIDS. In 2010 29,000 new HIV infections were from gay men, a 12% increase from the 26,000 in 2008. Although gay men represent 4% of the male population in the United States they account for 78% of new new HIV infections among men. In 2011 54% of all people living with HIV are gay men. In 2010 white gay men continued to account for the largest number of new HIV infection followed closely by African American gay men with young gay men accounting for the largest group (55%). The greatest number of new HIV infections were among young African American men ages 13-24. Young African American gay men accounted for 45% new HIV infections.
