On the Wrist, from off the Cuff: Seiko – SBDC101 (SPB143) vs. Zodiac Super Sea Wolf 53; Value Prop?

On this episode we follow up with Seiko's Prospex SBDC101(JDM)/SPB143(Int'l) 62MAS inspired diver. The initial video got a ton of great feedback but I did notice a small trend of those viewers who felt that the watch was overpriced. Many of them compared it to some lower end microbrand direct homages to the 62MAS and later SLA017 reissue. Although I am working on a direct comparison to a very popular affordable 62MAS homage, I personally feel that the SBDC101 more closely compares to Swiss Made models like the Tudor Black Bay 58 and the Oris Divers Sixty-Five. Then, as I was going through my watch storage, I took a long look at my Zodiac Super Sea Wolf – ZO9266 and started thinking how close these two really are in terms of spec, overall theme, and even price point. Funny thing is, when it comes to the Zodiac, most people generally accept the higher price tier without a Ceramic bezel insert, with pin & collar link connectors, and without a modern milled tooless micro-adjusting dive clasp. So we'll compare specs and talk value proposition between these two, as well as touch on some general QA/QC perspectives to keep in mind when applying larger scale to production runs.
