Community outreach informs decision making
The Community Health Worker pilot project began in Bouake in 2014 in order to make a difference in health care practices at a grassroots level and encourage more women to go to health centres, and keep their follow-up appointments.
More than 500 community health workers were trained on Essential Family Practices, including passing on knowledge about reproductive health and basic care during pregnancy. They also learned about sensitizing communities to better health practices, and home-based care for basic illnesses. They were taught to collect data from the community, so they would have a basic health history of the people under their care.
The information they are gathering has helped to inform broader decisions on health policy.
