Made by Academy Productions, this gorgeous color film "Going Places" is about the problem of traffic congestion, and the necessity of having a good public transit system in an urban environment. Copyright is 1952 and it was produced by General Electric, which hoped to use it to promote electric transit vehicles including trolley buses and trolley cars. At the time, urban transit systems such as Los Angeles' famous Red Car streetcar system were under threat from gasoline powered buses, and new freeway construction and the availability of personal car ownership threatened the idea of mass transit. These factors certainly were motivating factors in the production of this film -- which incidentally seems as relevant today as it did when it was made.

The PCC (Presidents’ Conference Committee) was a trolley car design that was intended to compete with buses. The PCC's streamline design was intended to be comfortable and quiet. It was both smooth and fast and could be operated by a single, seated operator using floor mounted pedals instead of traditional hand controls. It was one of the most successful 20th Century trolley car types.
