Condemning the Attack on Salman Rushdie | Dr. Shabir Ally & Dr. Safiyyah Ally

Dr. Shabir Ally says the recent attack on Salman Rushdie is un-Islamic. He says the fatwa by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 against Rushdie's book, The Satanic Verses, was widely denounced by Muslim scholars, since the Quran doesn't prescribe the death penalty for those who blaspheme. But at the same time, many Muslims felt Rushdie had gone too far in his depictions of their beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and that there should be some limits on freedom of expression. Dr. Safiyyah Ally says that the Quran mentions people referring to the Prophet as a madman and magician, but the Quran doesn't say they must be punished. Dr. Shabir adds that the Quran mentions people becoming Muslims in the morning and renouncing their faith later in the presence of the Prophet, which suggests a tolerance for detractors to Islam. Dr. Safiyyah ends by praying for Rushdie's recovery and for Muslims who support the attack to turn back the teachings of the Quran.
