Reason #19 for being a Muslim: Islam emphasizes respect for parents and the elderly.
Dr. Shabir Ally says that nowadays, there is a lot of disrespect, discrimination and even neglect of the elderly, especially of parents. Though systems are in place to ensure that people in their retirement years will have social security and supplemental income, people need companionship, love and quality time. The Quran 17:23-24 says that if one or both our parents reach old age, we are not say a word of contempt to them, but we should lower before them the wings of humility and submission. And we’re to pray for them, asking God to have mercy on them, as they used to care for us when we were young. In our society, we tend to look down on the elderly, almost as if they are obsolete. Islam takes a different approach. It gives preference to people of age because they have experience.
