Roberto Battiston è nato nel 1956 a Trento. Dal 1993 è ordinario di Fisica Generale presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria dell'Università di Perugia e dal 2012 ordinario di Fisica Sperimentale presso il Dipartimento di Fisica di Trento.
È attivo da più di 30 anni in collaborazioni scientifiche internazionali nel campo della fisica sperimentale delle interazioni fondamentali agli acceleratori e nello spazio (Fisica delle Interazioni Forti, Fisica delle Interazioni Deboli ed Elettromagnetiche, Studio dei raggi cosmici dallo spazio).
È stato deputy spokesperson di AMS, il grande esperimento per la ricerca dell'antimateria nello spazio installato sulla stazione spaziale ISS nel maggio del 2011 durante la missione STS134.
Oltre ad essere autore di oltre 400 lavori pubblicati su riviste internazionali e di tre brevetti, è organizzatore di numerosi congressi dedicati alla scienza spaziale (Trento 1999, Elba 2002, Washington 2003, Pechino 2006, CERN 2012).
Svolge inoltre attività di divulgazione scientifica collaborando con i quotidiani La Stampa, Il Corriere della Sera, Il Sole 24 Ore e i periodici L'Indice e Le Scienze dove da anni tiene una rubrica mensile e un blog "Astri e Particelle".
Married, four children, Roberto Battiston was born in 1956, in Trento.
Graduated in Physics at Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa in 1979.
In 1982, he earned a Third Cycle Doctorate, at Paris IX University, Orsay.
Professor of General Physics since 1993 at the Engineering Faculty
of the University of Perugia.
Professor of Experimental Physics at Physics Department in Trento, since 2012.
Graduated Honoris Causa at the University of Bucharest (2000).
He's been active for 30 years now in scientific collaborations in the field of fundamental interactions, both in accelerators and in space: physics of strong interactions, physics of weak and electromagnetic interactions, study of cosmic rays in space.
Deputy spokesperson of the AMS experiment, the big experiment for the quest of antimatter in space, installed on ISS (International Space Station) in May 2011, during STS134 mission.
He authored over 400 papers, published on international journals. He owns three patents.
Organizer of many congresses dedicated to space science (Trento 1999, Elba
2002, Washington 2003, Pechino 2006, CERN 2012).
Moreover, he's a science divulgator that works with Italian newspapers such as La
Stampa, Il Corriere della Sera, Il Sole 24 Ore and magazines like L'Indice and Le Scienze where he's been holding per years a monthly section and a blog called "Astri e Particelle" (Stars and Particles).
