Visiting The Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary AKA The Lion Whisperer
We specifically stopped over at Johannesburg to take a day trip to visit the Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary. We've been following him on YouTube and Instagram for over a year and thankfully we were heading over to Cape Town for a business incentive trip so we seized this opportunity to visit the beautiful animals in his sanctuary.
The sanctuary is home to 30 lions rescued from captive-breeding and cub-petting facilities. They also have Black Leopards and Hyenas. The sanctuary aims to raise awareness of the plight of Lions in Africa. In Africa, lions have been forced to survive on land that is only one-fifth of the size they occupied a few decades ago. If habitats shrink further, and the lion population continues to decline at the same rate, it is predicted that there will be no lions left in the wild in 20 years’ time.
Rapid agricultural expansion and human population increase has resulted in our planet’s wildlife, especially its large predators, becoming second-class citizens.
Please avoid tourist facilities that are breeding lions in captivity. These facilities perpetuate the cycle of canned hunting.
