Ethereum Transaction Fees Drop, Address Poisoning Scams Surge
The implementation of the Ethereum network update known as the "Fusaka" upgrade has significantly reduced transaction fees. However, malicious actors have exploited this cost efficiency to launch large-scale address poisoning attacks. Recent data shows that the frequency of these attacks has increased more than fivefold, from an average of 30,000 to 167,000 fraudulent transactions per day since the gas fee reduction.
Address poisoning is a fraudulent scheme that targets users who fail to verify their crypto wallet addresses. This method involves sending zero-value asset transactions from fake addresses that have been modified to have identical beginning and ending characters to the victim's address. The goal is to "poison" the victim's recent transaction history, so that crypto investors inadvertently copy the fake address when attempting to transfer assets in the future.
Due to this surge in illegal activity, total losses to crypto investors globally have reportedly exceeded $63.3 million, or nearly Rp1 trillion. Cybersecurity experts emphasize that the majority of crypto wallets currently lack automatic protection against this anomaly. Users are strongly advised to thoroughly verify the destination address characters and avoid using transaction history as a reference source for address copying to mitigate the risk of permanent asset loss.
