Gabriel Fauré: Cantique de Jean Racine sung by Choir at Catholic Church in Diocese of Brooklyn
Gabriel Fauré (1845 - 1924) composed the music for the text to Cantique de Jean Racine for mixed choir and piano or organ by Gabriel Fauré. Fauré's Cantique was first performed on 4 August 1866.
It was recorded here live at Mass at Our Lady of Refuge Church in the Diocese of Brooklyn. Daniel Brondel directs his choir and organist Stephen Tharp accompanies the church choir on the pipe organ.
The pipe organ at Our Lady of Refuge was restored to as new condition through an international appeal for funds. This Brooklyn Church did not have to financial resources to restore the organ organ so it reached out to organists around the world and well over 1000 responded. The restoration work was carried out by A.R. Schopp's Sons, Ohio and Quimby Pipe Organs, Missouri. The Organ was dedicated by Olivier Latry, organist of Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris. The organ was blessed by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, the Bishop of Brooklyn.
The words in English: Cantique de Jean Racine
Word of God, one with the Most High, in Whom alone we have our hope, Eternal Day of heaven and earth, We break the silence of the peaceful night; Saviour Divine, cast your eyes upon us!
Pour on us the fire of your powerful grace, That all hell may flee at the sound of your voice Banish the slumber of a weary soul, That brings forgetfulness of your laws!
O Christ, look with favour upon your faithful people Now gathered here to praise you; Receive their hymns offered to your immortal glory; May they go forth filled with your gifts.
If you are in Brooklyn please drop by the church for Mass or call the parish office to ask to see this pipe organ. www.olrbrooklyn.org
