Janet Yieh plays Elgar Sonata (I. Allegro Maestoso) Woolsey Hall Yale

Organist Janet Yieh plays the Andante Espressivo from Edward Elgar's Sonata Op. 28 in Woolsey Hall at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Performed live on the Newberry Memorial Organ. The organ was rebuilt in 1928 by the Skinner Organ Company of Boston as it Opus 722.

Sonata in G Major, Op. 28 I. Allegro Maestoso – Edward Elgar (1857-1934)

A native of Worcester, England, Edward Elgar grew up in a musical family and was a largely self-taught composer. His success began with the Imperial March in 1897 and the Enigma Variations on an Original Theme in 1899. He is most recognized today for his orchestral works The Dream of Gerontius and the Pomp and Circumstance Marches. Elgar said of the first Pomp and Circumstance, a mainstay of graduation ceremonies, “a tune like that comes once in a lifetime …" and it certainly captured the Edwardian spirit of the era. Elgar’s organ sonata was first performed in 1895 for a group of American organists visiting Worcester. He had only finished the score the week before, which made for a famously disastrous performance by cathedral organist Hugh Blair. Nevertheless, the Organ Sonata was arguably Elgar’s most significant symphonic writing up to that point and the powerful first movement commands the full scope of the orchestral capabilities of the Newberry Memorial Organ in Woolsey Hall at Yale.

Named one of the Diapason Magazine's 20 under 30 in 2017, organist Janet Yieh is pursuing her Master of Musical Arts Degree with Thomas Murray at Yale's Institute of Sacred Music and Yale School of Music and serves as ​Organ Scholar at Christ Church, New Haven ​and Organist for Berkeley Divinity School. A pianist from age 4, violinist from age 7 and organist from age 11, Janet is a graduate of the Juilliard School and her former posts include Senior Organ Scholar of Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven and Assistant Organist of Trinity Church, Wall Street in New York.
