Uni-Lateral Chest Supported Row: Physio Exercise for Back Strength & Scapular Control
At BeFit Training Physiotherapy in Edgecliff and Coogee, the Uni-Lateral Chest Supported Row is used to develop unilateral upper back strength and scapular retraction control in a supported position that eliminates lower back compensation — making it a precise and effective exercise in shoulder and spinal rehabilitation programs.
Why chest supported? The chest pad removes the trunk stability demand from the rowing movement, which means the working muscles — the rhomboids, middle trapezius, and latissimus dorsi — can be loaded directly without lower back or postural compensation. This is particularly important in rehabilitation when fatigue or pain inhibits the ability to maintain a neutral spine under load, and when the clinical goal is to isolate scapular and upper back function specifically.
Why unilateral? Performing the row on one side at a time allows each arm to move independently, exposing and addressing bilateral strength asymmetries that a standard bilateral row would mask. Unilateral loading also increases the rotational stability demand on the core and the contralateral shoulder girdle, adding a functional element without compromising the supported position.
What to focus on:
Adjust the chest pad so the torso is fully supported and the working arm hangs freely toward the floor
Initiate the row by retracting the scapula before bending the elbow — the shoulder blade should move first
Pull the handle toward the lower ribcage or hip, keeping the elbow close to the body
Squeeze the scapula into retraction at the end of the row and hold briefly before lowering
Lower the weight slowly through the full eccentric range — do not let the shoulder protract aggressively at the bottom
Keep the neck neutral and avoid rotating the trunk toward the working arm
