Chilean Police Anniversary Becomes Mourning Day After Officers Slain

Chileans marched on April 27 to commemorate the 97th anniversary of the national police, but it turned into a somber occasion following the tragic killing of three police officers in southern Chile. President Gabriel Boric condemned the attack as cowardly, declaring three days of national mourning. Supporters of the Carabineros gathered in Santiago to defend the security force. The officers were ambushed in Canete, Arauco province, after responding to false emergency calls. They were attacked with heavy-caliber weapons and their vehicle was burned. President Boric visited the region to offer condolences. The incident underscores longstanding tensions with the Mapuche Indigenous people in the area.
