Seven Villages Evacuate After Eruption Of Indonesia's Mount Ibu

Mt. Ibu on Halmahera island in Indonesia erupted spectacularly on the evening of May 18, emitting a grey ash cloud 4 km high and illuminating the sky with purple lightning around its crater. Authorities evacuated residents from seven nearby villages, deploying a joint team of police, military and search and rescue officials. The disaster mitigation agency recommended a seven-kilometer radius be cleared, though the exact number of evacuees was not provided. The alert level was raised to the highest on May 16, following multiple eruptions. Indonesia, located on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' has 127 active volcanoes.
