Tourists are horrified! Two islands are washed away by floods! Mallorca and Menorca! Spain
The storm continues to hit the Balearic Islands. Mallorca and Menorca struck by heavy flooding.
After a very complicated Wednesday, especially in Formentera, this Thursday the storm moved to Mallorca, in the morning, and Menorca, in the afternoon, where there was significant damage due to the rain.
The storms have given a respite towards the evening and in the early hours of the night, but it will still be possible to download strongly on any island - with special attention to the east of Mallorca and the Serra de Tramuntana - during this Friday.
The Emergency Service of the Balearic Islands has asked the population to be "cautious", to exercise extreme caution and avoid outdoor activities.
One of the most affected areas this Thursday afternoon was the center of Menorca, where the heavy rains -- with record numbers -- overflowed the torrent in the town of Mercadal.
The avenue of water has caused numerous material damages. It has swept away furniture and cars and left basements flooded. In the village, 200 liters per square meter fell in less than four hours, 78 of which between four and five in the afternoon.
Since measures were taken, 200 liters had never been exceeded in the month of August in the Balearic Islands. The rain that fell this Thursday in Es Mercadal -- 204.2 liters in total -- is the third most important record in Menorca.
In Alaior, the Civil Guard has evacuated 31 people from a residence for the elderly because the building was at risk of collapsing as a result of the heavy rains.
In this same municipality, the body also rescued two adults and three minors from the same family who were traveling in the car and could not continue the journey because the vehicle was covered by half a meter of water.
During the afternoon, the Civil Guard rescued with a helicopter about twenty people who had been trapped in the area of the Llucalari road, in Alaior, which had become impassable.
Towards evening the storm moved again towards Mallorca, where in the morning it had already unloaded with great intensity, especially in the north of the island. Here the precipitation has caused landslides and has complicated circulation in the Serra de Tramuntana.
The rains have caused flooding in Sóller, Manacor and Pollença. The torrent of Sa Figuera has overflowed and some vehicles have been trapped by the water.
Between Wednesday and Thursday, the number of incidents handled by the 112 emergency number rose to 290. Specifically, there were 184 in Mallorca, 63 in Menorca, 23 in Ibiza and 21 in Formentera.
