Teaching Parametric Design with Parametrix for CAD Programs | 2025 Fab Educators Summit

Parametric designing is a Computer Aided Design methodology that is shaped based on algorithmic processes rather than direct manipulation, which when utilized simplifies and speeds up the design process. Despite the potential benefits the method is underutilized due to the scarcity of accessible resources. This is where Parametrix comes in as a way to teach parametric design in a comprehensible, engaging way. Through a user-friendly pixel art interface the user inputs prompts to an AI model, which generates a JSON file containing the specified elements from the prompt. This JSON file is then used to create corresponding objects in Fusion 360 by sending the file to a Fusion360 API script and the object is created in Fusion360 through the API. As the prompts are completely parameter dependent this forces every object to be parametric leading the user to employ basic techniques of parametric designing. In the talk the creation and potential uses of this tool will be elaborated upon.

Parametrix is a teaching tool designed to make learning parametric design engaging and approachable. Using a fun, pixel-art interface, users input simple prompts into an AI model, which generates a set of instructions (in a file format called JSON). These instructions are then used to create objects in the design software Fusion 360, all while following the principles of parametric design.
This process encourages learners to explore the basics of parametric thinking by relying entirely on parameters, or rules, to define their designs. In this session, we’ll discuss how Parametrix works, share its potential applications in the classroom, and explore how it can make parametric design more accessible for students and educators alike.
