Catalyzing the Community as a School Makerspace
Joe Oliphant, Passport Academy, Pittsburgh, PA
Passport Academy serves nontraditional students (age 16-21) who have faced challenging barriers to high school graduation. Without a digital makerspace on the school's campus, we are finding ways within the community for students to participate in hands on technology learning opportunities. Using the community resources and makerspaces as partners, Passport Academy has been able to offer unique educational opportunities to our students in an effort to not only help students obtain their diploma but earn valuable skills that will lead to employment opportunities in the region. In this session I will share our challenges and success in working with community-based makerspaces and offer tips and best practices for forging similar partnerships in your own communities.
