Wood Glue Types for Woodworking | How-to

For wood glue to work properly, you need 4 things:
- Tight fitting joints
- Clean joints - no old glue or finish on them
- Proper amount of glue - spread on all surfaces, and enough to squeeze out when clamped - don’t glue starve the joint
- Pressure - clamp with moderate pressure

Without all 4 of these, the wood glue won’t stick properly and the joint will fail prematurely.

I most commonly use a PVA glue, but I also use liquid hide glue. It's difficult to find liquid hide glue, so here are some links to the two products that I'm aware of:

In the case where there's a loose joint, epoxy glue is the only glue that will hold that joint together. Here's a video that demonstrates fixing a chair with epoxy glue https://youtu.be/En98y7NFwu0

There are times where wood glue isn't the right tool for the job, such as applying laminates or veneers where non-waterbased adhesives are required. For those type of jobs, I use contact cement. It's a unique glue that needs to be applied to both surfaces. It needs to dry until it's tacky. When the two pieces touch, the glue will bond immediately, so it requires careful planning to make sure you get it right.
