Arrane Oie Vie: The traditional Manx Goodnight Song
A short demonstration video of how to sing the traditional Manx song performed at the end of gatherings.
The words are as follows:
T’eh traa goll thie as goll dy lhie,
Ta’n stoyll ta foym greinnagh mee roym.
T’eh signal dooin dy ghleashagh
T’eh tayrn dys traa ny lhiabbagh.
My ghuillyn vie, shegin dooin goll thie,
Ta’n dooid cheet er y chiollagh.
Te’h geginagh shin dy gholl dy lhie,
T’eh bunnys traa dy ghra, ‘Oie Vie’.
Translation:
Time to go home and go to bed,
The chair under me urges me to go.
We must make a move.
‘Tis drawing to time for bed.
Darkness has come, we must go home;
Black grows the hearth’s warm light;
That is our sign to go to rest.
It’s almost time to say, ‘good night’.
