Chicken Of The Woods, Sulphur Shelf Mushroom Identification - Wild Edible Mushrooms
Hey guys in this video we will take a look at the Chicken of the Woods Mushroom, or the Sulphur Shelf Mushroom. This is a very popular wild edible mushroom that is easy to identify because of its distinct colors. It get its name sulphur shelf from the yellow sulphur like coloration on the underside of the mushroom. The Chicken of the Woods is a polypore species, meaning that it doesn't have gills, like a toxic look a like called the Jack o Lantern Mushrooms, or Big Laughing Jim which has Gills. The chicken of the woods commonly grows on hardwood logs like Oaks and is generally found in the late summer to early fall. It has another edible look a like that has a white underside instead of the yellow sulphur like underside of this mushroom specimen. It's also a shelf growing mushroom which means it grows in a shelf like pattern, producing mushrooms up to 25 pounds!
It gets the other part of its common name from the distinct texture and taste of the mushroom which is reminiscent of Chicken Breast. The mushroom has long striations of grain, running through the flesh which give it its hearty texture. The Chicken of the Woods is notorious for not shrinking while cooking, so it goes good in many pasta and casserole style dishes. Overall the Chicken of the Wodds is an easy wild edible mushroom to identify and I hope you guys enjoy it!
