What the Sodajerkers know about songwriting

Old Liverpool schoolfriends Simon Barber and Brian O'Connor – aka the Sodajerker songwriting partnership - also run the ‘Sodajerker on Songwriting’ podcast whose 203 episodes have featured everyone from Paul Simon, Burt Bacharach and Mike Stoller to Martin Fry and St Vincent. There’s nothing they don’t know about the art of marrying words to music from the typewriter-and-pipe-smoke days of Tin Pan Alley to the mob-handed, industrial, “track and hook” process of the current hit market. This takes in Pearl Jam, Mike Viola, what Sparks can do with a single line, “chasing the demo”, a tour of Paisley Park, Tom Petty, the Beatles and a vintage Amstrad home-studio that fell off the back of a monastery. You get piercing insights, too, into Prefab Sprout’s Steve McQueen and the White Album (“touching, unsettling, daft, corny, all of life is represented”).
