Mark Paytress - glorious camp, delicious irony and why Glam Rock could have only happened in Britain

Mark Paytress, author and MOJO magazine mainstay, was 14 when he saw Roxy Music with Eno, a packet of Consulate in his pocket. There’s a Proustian rush about his upcoming account of the whole era, ‘Glam!: When Superstars Rocked The World, 1970-1974’, a beautifully written, fast-paced pop history illustrated with old adverts, press clippings, ticket stubs and majestic photographs, some from fans’ collections. In this Zoomcast he traces it all back to its roots, among them old-fashioned notions of stardom (Hedy Lamarr, Ginger Rogers, Barbara Stanwyck) and Warhol’s concept of the ‘superstar’, Mike Leander’s Burundi Black drum sound, the ascent of colour TV and the glossy pop press, youth clubs, bigger sound systems, the football terrace, the visual signatures of Cabaret and A Clockwork Orange, a uniquely British fondness for camp and irony and the happy absence of professional stylists. How did Glam start, why did it end and what’s made it so enduring?
