Jing got to see a newborn baby girl who was already pregnant with twins when she came along.

Jing started working at a maternity clinic as soon as she graduated from college. This was the job she had always wanted. Every time Jing delivered a baby and heard its first cry, she felt so emotional she was on the verge of tears. Every baby looked like an adorable little angel reaching out for its mother's breast with its tiny little lips. Even after Jing became a mother herself, she still felt the same about her job.

Of course, not every delivery goes according to the textbooks. Some of the cases Jing witnessed have pretty much traumatized her.

There was one young girl who flat-out refused to breastfeed her firstborn. The entire medical team gathered up to talk some sense into her, but she just turned towards the wall and kept crying and shaking her head no. She ended up surrendering the child. Jing was tempted to adopt the boy herself, but she wasn't married yet. Thankfully, he found new parents soon enough anyway. Jing still remembers the day they came in to pick up their new son – with a doily blanket, lots of flowers for the doctors and nurses, and beaming smiles. As happy as Jing was for the baby's newfound family, she couldn't shake her anger and frustration at the girl who left the maternity home empty-handed like a failure of a mother. Hopefully she at least has a justification for what she's done.

Another labor that left a lasting trace in Jing's memory happened two years later. A 35-year-old woman was expecting her first baby. She was very lovely and good-looking. Her husband occupied the hospital hall for hours, anxious for his child to come along. He said he had two daughters already, so the birth of a son was long-anticipated. The labor was easy and uneventful and the mom was feeling great, but the child was born with a physical defect: he had no legs. Jing didn't even realize what was wrong with him at first, until the doctor lifted the baby up so the mother could have a look at him. That was when everyone gasped and knew why the boy seemed unnaturally short. He only had short stumps where his legs would be. The woman screamed. Jing could sympathize. She was the mother of a toddler herself at the time.

Then, Jing had to listen to the father yell at the mother to make her surrender the child. And to her tearful voice repeating: "No, no, never." In the end, the man accepted his wife's choice and the three of them left together.

What an absolutely astonishing woman! She stood by her son even against her own husband. Jing visited them as a substitute home nurse in the next few years. The woman was an amazing mother to her new son, and his older sisters helped her care for him as he was growing up. Jing has immense respect for her.

Then one day, Jing got to witness a labor that was truly breaking news. It was going very difficult until a healthy girl finally emerged, but she had an abnormally bloated belly. A multidisciplinary council of doctors examined the girl several times before finally diagnosing her with… pregnancy! It's a condition called "fetus in fetu", which affects one in 500 thousand deliveries. The team had to add several diagnoses to the newborn's chart, including oncology, as it was technically a tumor. In order to save the baby girl, they had to operate on her when she was just three weeks old. Two fetuses were extracted. One weighed half an ounce and the other even less than that. That tiny baby had been carrying twins!

Fetus in fetu remains a scientific mystery. The condition occurs when a fetus absorbs another fetus and there's no explanation why. In this girl's case, the twins landed between her liver and her kidneys. If the gestation went just a little differently, three perfectly healthy babies might have been born. As it happened, the baby girl had to endure a surgery that ensured she would live by killing her own siblings. Life is stranger than fiction!

The girl's mom was extremely worried about the surgery but Jing did her best to reassure her. The clinic's most experienced surgeons were assigned to operate on her baby and they'd make sure she'd be alright. She was probably mourning for her unborn babies in her heart, too. She cheered up when they brought her baby back after the surgery so the mom could keep an eye on her.

Whatever her diagnosis, the baby is alive and well, and safely home with her mother. And it's all that matters. Jing and the other doctors became really invested in her well-being so they keep in touch. The baby appears to be fine. She's a really beautiful and smart girl who's growing up just like an ordinary child. Let's hope she stays happy and healthy!
