SYRIA'S CHRISTIANS EXODUS by Elisabetta Valgiusti, Savethemonasteries, EWTN, 2014
The programme realized by Elisabetta Valgiusti highlights the extreme danger for Syrian Christianity in the midst of the conflict in act and the fears for its further effects. It records the conditions of the Syrian Christian refugees currently displaced in the neighbouring countries, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and presents current images of destroyed churches and other sites in Syria.
The Syrian refugees describe terror and dangers that obliged them to flee and report killings and persecution committed purposely against unarmed Christians.
The deep worries for the present and the future of Syria's Christianity is furthermore based on the interviews to Catholic Oriental Patriarchs and Bishops among those more involved in the crisis. They represent the sufferings of their communities and churches in Syria : Greek Melkite Catholic Patriarch Gregorios III Laham, Armenian Catholic Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX, Syriac Catholic Patriarch Ignace Joseph III Younan , Armenian Catholic Archbishop of Aleppo Boutros Marayati, Greek Melkite Catholic Archbishop of Aleppo Clemens Jeanbart, Syriac Catholic Archbishop of Aleppo Denys Antoine Chahda. They give witness of the violence of different jidahist and radical Islamic armed groups that keep destroying Syrian villages and towns . Most of the members of these groups are not Syrians .
In Iraq , Syriac Catholic Archbishop of Mosul, Yohanna Petros Mouche, and Naisan Karoomi, the Mayor of Al-Hamdania District that includes Karakosh , the most popolous Iraqi Christian town , underline the difficult situation in the towns of the Nineveh Plain .
Other important Middle East Catholic leaders partecipate to the program: Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal, Maronite Archbishop of Beirut Paul Youssef Matar , Greek Melkite Catholic Archbishop of Amman Yaser Al-Ayyash. While the President of Caritas Lebanon, Father Paul Karam , reports Caritas aid to the refugees and the effects of this emergency in Lebanon.
Cardinal Peter Turkson , President of the Pontifical Council Justice and Peace , gives his contribute to the programme focused on the committment of the Catholic Church for peace and the efforts of Pope Francis to promote it .
The programme Syria's Christian Exodus gives evidence of the extreme hard time that all Middle East and all its components are going through.
