How to Examine the Foot | Merck Manual Professional Version

How to examine the foot, including the following:
• Inspection and palpation (eg, including the medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, ankle joint line, mid-foot, heel, metatarsal bones, fifth metatarsal head, web spaces, interdigital spaces, longitudinal arch, tarso-metatarsal joints, calcaneal bone, navicular bone, other tarsal bones)
• Identification of deformities (eg, hallux valgus [bunion], hammertoes)
• Inspecting the patient’s shoes
• Inspecting while the patient stands to identify pes planus (flat feet) or pes cavus (high arches)
• Checking dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial artery pulses
• Range of motion testing (including dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, inversion, and eversion)
