The Role of Human Capital in U.S.-China Competition

The emerging geopolitical competition between the U.S. and China is often framed as a clash over technology, diplomacy, economics, and military predominance. Yet the global ambitions of both countries will increasingly depend on their ability to attract, develop, and keep foreign talent as well as prepare their own workforce for the industries of the future. Thus, a critical -- and often underappreciated -- component of U.S.-China relations are future developments in human capital, including immigration, population growth, educational attainment, and workforce training.

To explore these issues, the Freeman Chair in China Studies is pleased to host a conversation with Congressman Andy Kim (D-NJ), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Armed Services Committee. Following the discussion, Freeman Chair Jude Blanchette will moderate a panel discussion with Ryan Hass, the Michael H. Armacost Chair in the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution, Yingyi Ma, an Associate Professor of Sociology at Syracuse University, and Kaiser Kuo, the host of the Sinica Podcast.
