Challenges Facing CPC Politics | International Conference on CPC Futures
International Conference on CPC Futures
Organised by East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore
19 - 21 November 2021
Friday, 19 November 2021
8.00 pm - 10.30 pm (Singapore time)
Public Opening Session: Challenges Facing CPC Politics
The 20th Party Congress is a pivotal moment for the CPC. Inner party politics is complex and opaque for outside observers, but some key trends may become clear from decisions made at the conference. Among others, the congress will clarify whether general secretary Xi Jinping will obtain a third term, and whether an heir apparent will be designated. We may also expect more clarity on the future of Xi’s anti-corruption campaign, the tightening of inner-party discipline and the centralization of power, all of which will determine the course of the party in the years ahead. Though successful, the anti-corruption campaign has created resentment among some party members, and the limitation of local autonomy – traditionally a strength of the CPC and an engine of new policy ideas and adaptations – may impact performance in the future. During this opening session of the conference, we will explore these and other issues in a keynote speech followed by a panel discussion of specialists of CPC politics.
