Let Africans Decide: A Teacher's Story

Mr Masango, a teacher in a remote village in south-eastern Zimbabwe relates the lived experience of his students and his community living close to wildlife. He tells how he teaches the importance of conservation and stresses to his students that they must respect wild animals even though they represent danger. He understands that hunting tourism means not only food security in his community but, more than that, a means of lifting his community out of poverty. revenues from hunting and photographic tourism have funded education of some 600 pupils, clinics for the sick, mills for maize, jobs for the community. "Our people for generations looked up to the animals - more so now, with the income this brings from regulated safari hunting and photographic tourism because we know it plays an important role in our community."
