"Autumn Leaves" Easy Piano Arrangement + Sheet Music
In this video, I present the full score of my essential piano arrangement of the famous jazz standard "Autumn Leaves," including chord symbols and harmonic analysis. This arrangement was originally published earlier this year.
I based my arrangement in E minor, as in "The Real Book" (6th Edition), while adding some personal touches. "Autumn Leaves" is the English version of the French song "Les Feuilles Mortes," composed in 1945 by Joseph Kosma with lyrics by Jacques Prévert.
I chose a clean and essential approach to highlight the simple beauty of this composition.
Arrangement Details (Groups of Eight Bars):
First section (bars 1-8): I kept nearly all the original chords with minimal changes. The main differences from the Real Book transcription are in the theme’s attack, which is "compressed" into triplet eighth notes instead of regular quarter notes, and the cadence at the end of the theme, where there is an appoggiatura on the D#° chord while the bass is already on the tonic E.
Second section (bars 9-16): I added connecting melodies between phrases and, in the final part, I varied both the melody and chords. Instead of ending on E minor, I reintroduced the appoggiatura on D#° (this time with an F# bass), leading into an Em/G to prepare for the next section.
Third and fourth sections (bars 17-31): Here the variations are more significant. I modified both chords and melody while aiming to preserve the piece’s overall mood. Notably, I introduced a descending bass sequence (Em - Em/D - Cmaj7 - Cmaj7/B - Am), whereas the Real Book has two bars of E minor before moving to Am7. The two bars of Gmaj7 in the Real Book are here expanded into the sequence (Gmaj7 - Gmaj7/D - Db7b5 - Cmaj7). Additional modifications appear in the coda.
