Knee and Hip Pain Basics: The Clamshell
For hip and knee pain, there may be no simple exercise that works better on control of the hip than the clamshell. But, it's one of the most commonly misperformed exercises in the physical therapy clinic.
Dr. Seth Peterson, DPT demonstrates a clamshell progression in this video. First, starting on the side, rolled forward, with a hand on the pelvis to ensure no rolling back has occurred, slowly lifting and externally rotating the leg. From there, a band can be applied just above the knee. Another way to make the exercise more challenging is to elevate your legs as you lift up and down.
This can help improve hip control, which may be helpful for low back pain, hip pain, or knee pain as part of a comprehensive plan.
