Jonah is a story of God's mercy, compassion, and ultimately love toward mankind.

• In chapter 1, the LORD directs Jonah to prophesy in Nineveh, a thriving pagan and murderous city, but Jonah flees instead to Tarshish. Jonah sails on a boat toward Tarshish when a ravenous storm takes over the sea. The sailors fear the Lord of Jonah and reluctantly throw Jonah overboard which immediately has a calming effect on the storm.

• In chapter 2, Jonah repents and prays while in the belly of a sea creature. God hears his prayer and Jonah Is delivered out of the belly of the beast.

• In chapter 3, Jonah prophesied total destruction of Nineveh In forty days unless the city repents before God. The king of Nineveh orders an absolute fast of all inhabitants including livestock. God responds with mercy and spares Nineveh.

• In chapter 4, God teaches Jonah that His compassion extends to all people, including those who Jonah deemed to be the worst of the worst.

The story of Jonah is a tremendously satirical narrative in which the prophet Jonah rebels against God; pagan sailors actually worship God; and an entire murderous city and its king humble themselves and repent before God.
