Appropriate action after a chemical emergency can save lives
With the ongoing war a number of Ukraine’s industrial facilities appeared in the epicenter of military action, elsewhere across the country they were suffered from bombing or rocket strikes. This brought the urgency of chemical security response for the country to an entirely new level. Protection of people from chemical threats is based on proper training of rescue personnel.
This video pictures a practical exercise, that was organized by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine in Kharkiv on 13 October 2021.
37 Ukrainian rescuers from across the country and civil defense trainers (including 7 women) improved their skills and knowledge in handling chemical emergencies. The trainings were delivered in three stages, with the concluding part taking place at the grounds of the National University of Civil Defense.
It is a part of three sessions, ran in the course of the year with the OSCE support to prepare personnel of the State Emergency Service to embed recommendations for a new training programme, developed and presented with the OSCE support.
These recommendations and training materials are available here: https://www.osce.org/project-coordinator-in-ukraine/511486
Separately, the Co-ordinator distributed awareness raising materials to enable informing general public of safety measures for various incidents: https://www.osce.org/project-coordinator-in-ukraine/516009
The effort was part of the “Enhancing Ukraine’s Chemical Emergency Response Capacity” project implemented with the financial support of the U.S. Mission to the OSCE and German Federal Foreign Office and in partnership with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
