An Average Joe's guide to sharpening | How to sharpen a hand plane (2024)
This video is a low-detail straight forward guide on how to sharpen a hand plane and I guarantee it will teach you how to get a plane iron sharp enough to take plane shavings.
I know a lot of videos on YouTube focus on getting the sharpest plane iron possible and I think those are great and I have learned a lot from them, but if you are just starting out I think those videos can be a little overwhelming. At least, they were for me. That is why I wanted to create a video that would walk through my simple sharpening process that uses a simple set of tools and doesn't go into too much detail or theory about the sharpening process.
My goal with this video is to get you a plane iron that is going to be sharp enough for you to take plane shavings. By no means do I think this will get you the sharpest of sharp irons. I know there are plenty of water stones and even diamond stones that have finer grits that'll provide a keener edge than what I use. And my hope is that once you get familiar with how to sharpen a plane iron that you'll then be able to more easily experiment with water stones or free hand sharpening, but first, I hope this video will teach you the basics.
Thanks for watching!
