With an elevation slightly higher than Denver, Albuquerque sits in a high desert area of New Mexico in between the Sandia Mountains and the West Mesa with the Rio Grande running through the middle valley. Its unique geographical position, known as the Albuquerque Basin, affords the area four mild seasons every year with snow in the winter and cool nights in the summer. Sitting atop a large aquifer fed by deposits from the Rio Grande it was believed that water would always be plentiful in the area. As a result a green light was given in response to a population boom in the 80s and 90s culminating in large housing developments, golf courses and casinos along with a massive expansion of the City to the west. With large amounts of clean water essential in the manufacturing of computer chips Intel, in 1993, was successfully recruited to build a manufacturing facilty in nearby Rio Rancho. However further research by the US Geological Survey has proven that deposits from the Rio Grande are not nearly as plentiful as once believed and flucuate according to weather and climate phenomena. With only 8 incles of rain and mountain snow melts supplying additional sources of water to the aquifer, water convservation efforts have greatly increased in recent years.
