Seabird colony of Manuk Island in Indonesia

Manuk Island is one of only six seabird colonies left in Indonesia and one of the few left in the entire southeast Asia and south China Sea. It was formally the country's largest seabird colony but despite being protected, numbers of seabirds continue to decline. Part of the cause may be that the island is heavily rat-infested. Removing rats is thought to be critical to seabird population recovery. With strong evidence seabirds are essential to ocean and reef productivity, protecting this seabird colony is essential to rebuilding the Banda Sea's former glory in terms of its environment and fisheries.
