This is a story about the dynamics and some of the combat capabilities of the S-75 missile system.

The straightening method was first used on the S-25 Berkut anti-aircraft missile system. It was modified to the half-straightening method in the S-75 system. It is widely used among command-controlled anti-aircraft missiles. Modern missile systems such as Thor and Pantsir also use this guidance method.

The S-75 was put into service in 1957, and was subsequently upgraded several times and proved to be highly effective. This system was used to shoot down the largest number of aircraft in the 20th century (among other SAMS).

The main military conflict in which she took part was the Vietnam war. In Vietnam, the United States used all its air power - thousands of aircraft of all types.This air force was opposed by only one type of SAM - S-75. During the war, more than 5.000 S-75 missiles were launched. According to North Vietnam data, which was also used by the Soviet defense Ministry, about 2000 American aircraft were shot down. Later, on the basis of careful research, 1293 downed target (1163 aircraft and 130 UAV) were confirmed. The use of the S-75 turned air warfare for the US air force from a routine job to a struggle for survival. All the tactics were changed, the losses, the cost of the war, and the stress of the pilots increased many times.

For propaganda purposes, pilots and the US population were told that on average only 1 in 40 missiles would hit the target, and in operation Linebacker 2, an alleged 1,200 missiles were fired and 15 B-52s were shot down. These myths are still common, although they are gradually giving way to objective data. On average, 4 missiles shot down 1 plane. The most difficult time for the S-75 was during operation Linebacker-2, when approximately 9 missiles were spent on shooting down 1 B-52. On the other hand, at the beginning of the war, there were cases when a single missile hit 2 or even 3 aircraft flying close to each other and not expecting an attack.
