Anne-Marie and Xavier Michel HUBERT-BRIERRE along with Michel GUISS DJOMOU have installed six large glass mirrors in the Gabonese forest at six different locations along a path from Oyan to Nyonié, in the area between Pongara National Park and the Presidential Wonga Wongué Reserve in the west part of Gabon. In this uncontrolled and natural environment, multiple cameras have been placed in front of each mirror in order to film the reactions of animals in front of their reflection from different angles and at different distances. The chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), often take this path and have met with these mirrors. Their long and repeated actions in front of these mirrors, have been filmed by camera traps.
In front of a mirror, each chimpanzee effectively recognizes his neighbours among the reflections, he also notices the presence of a stranger he has never met: his image he does not know. Why is he here? Why would I share with this unknown silverback the right to mate with the females in our group? In an attempt to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), this chimpanzee shows his large build, in standing in a bipedal position, stretching out his arms, ruffling his hair and shows his strength with heavy, loudly slaps with cupped hands on the ground. These slaps on the ground must be very noisy because this alpha chimpanzee want to show his power and thus scare the invader of his domain (his own image) and push him to escape. His reflection taking the same attitude, he hesitates to fight it.
The videos of the chimpanzees demonstrate that little by little, certain among them show the capacity to recognize themselves. This is the case primarily among the females, who contrary to the adult males, do not interpret their reflection as an enemy. An individual chimpanzees' repeated examination of body parts in the mirror, which cannot be seen without a mirror, such as the teeth and back, will confirm that the chimpanzee in question has indeed recognized itself.
